Study looks into how many operations breast cancer patients undergo

A new study published in The Journal of American Medical Association found that a vast number of breast cancer patients that undergo lumpectomies have to go under the knife more than once.

"The number of operations women undergo definitely depends on where you're treated, and even to a greater level on which surgeon you see," said first author of the study Dr. Lawrence McCahill. "We put the math behind it and said, this is a lot of second operations that maybe don’t make a difference."

One of the major reasons why repeat operations occur is because surgeons do not have a consensus on how much of a margin of healthy tissue should remain when the cancer is removed. McCahill explained that this needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during her lifetime. Not only is it the second most common form of cancer among women after skin cancer, but it is the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women, following only lung cancer.
