Students fight to support breast cancer awareness

The breast cancer awareness group responsible for the "I ♥ Boobies!" campaign is coming to the aid of two Easton, Pennsylvania, students to fight the school system there that is trying to ban the popular bracelets, The Morning Call reports.

Two 13-year old girls, Brianna Hawk and Kayla Martinez, have paired up with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to fight the ban after both girls were threatened with suspension for refusing to take their bracelets off. Now, Keep A Breast Foundation has also decided to back the young ladies as they fight against the school district that is appealing an April decision by U.S. District Judge Mary A. McLaughlin, who found the ban to be an unconstitutional restriction on the students' freedom of expression.

"The real issue under the Fraser standard is how much does a school official have to back up a declaration that something is inappropriate," ACLU attorney Mary Catherine Roper told the news outlet. "Is simply saying so enough, or does it have to jibe with something that is actually going on in the school."

Roper added that she's happy to have the Keep A Breast Foundation on their side to express to the court the exact meaning behind the phrase as they soon face court in the 3rd Circuit.

With 1 in 8 women set to battle the disease in her lifetime, according to BreastCancer.org, it's important to advocate and spread awareness.
