Breast cancer survival rates higher now than a decade ago

A breast cancer diagnosis can lead to many different emotions. However, researchers may have some good news - survival rates for patients are increasing.

The National Cancer Institute released a new report that lists the five-year survival rate for those diagnosed with stage one breast cancer at 100 percent. As the Black Hills Pioneer reports, this provides women with the ability to approach a diagnosis knowing that medical advancements have increased their chances of beating the disease.

"In general, people do much better today than they ever have," Dr Michael Robinson told the news source. "Overall, we've improved peoples' prognosis. The good news is that most ladies can be cured with treatment and most don't relapse."

Doctors still encourage women to monitor their breast health and check for any lumps. They should also continue to be screened by their physician, with women over the age of 40 having a yearly mammogram conducted. Early detection is key in beating the illness.

The current risk of developing breast cancer in one's lifetime is one in eight.
